It’s been three and a half years of being a mother. But I had not realized my strengths and protectiveness in this new journey of motherhood.
Motherhood is not only for humans but for animals and birds too
This incident made me feel that being a mother is not a privilege only for humans, but also for the animals and birds.
Cooking in the morning and gazing through the kitchen window is a regular affair for me. But these days the morning kitchen time has become a blessing.
Experiencing a new life taking place on a tree opposite my kitchen window. A crow has made a nest over there, a few days back I noticed two chicks in the nest.
Now it’s a morning routine to see them growing. The Mama crow flies away just for 4-5 minutes and comes back with food for the chicks. She doesn’t leave them alone for a longer time. And these chicks also don’t come out unless their Mama calls them. Cute! isn’t it? Just like us, humans.

But today the morning was not a regular one. As soon as the Mama crow flew away to get the food for the chicks, a pigeon went to the nest in mom’s absence. Looking at the scary pigeon, the chicks started struggling, but they still can’t shout or cry out.
I wish I could help them. The tree is a few feet away from my kitchen window but not reachable for me. I prayed to the God to save the tiny, helpless souls.
And within a fraction of second, the Mama crow arrived and started fighting with the pigeon.
Shockingly, some more pigeons gathered and attacked the nest. The mommy fought with almost everyone and saved the chicks. (sounds filmy no??, but that is the fact)
Wow, Mama crow had won the fight and saved the little munchkins’ life. Such a fighter she is.
It was a mesmerizing experience. How we moms get so much of strength. How the girls become so protective of their respective kids, as soon as they become moms or maybe as soon as they conceive and get to know that a life is taking place inside them? Isn’t this some kind of God gift?
It’s like motherhood itself is a powerful thing.
I am protective and at times overprotective of my child. By God’s grace no life-threatening thing happened to us, but still, I am an overprotective mom.
Motherhood changed me a lot. An introvert to an extrovert and not so social to a bit social (with my child’s friends’ moms 😀 ).
And today I witnessed that even the birds have similar sentiments towards their kids. God has gifted these sentiments and sensitivity to all the parents may be.
Not only moms but fathers are equally caring and protective of their little munchkins. A father is undoubtedly the strong pillar of this parenthood journey. (I haven’t seen the dad crow near the nest till date though :p )
So the motherhood has similar feelings in all the living creatures. I have witnessed monkeys carrying their kids along with them and attacking people if they tried harming the kid.
In my childhood, we had some hens at home. And I know how wild and aggressive the Mama hens become if we tried touching their respective chickens. Once a Mama hen had poked me on my leg while I tried touching her little cutie chicken. Somehow my mom saved me from the angry, wild hen. Else Mama hen would have just left me bleeding. (And then my mom scolded me after applying some ointment :'( , my angry mama )
My mom said, all the moms are super protective for their kids. So never try hurting the kid, else Mama will attack you. And the wilder ones may hurt you more than this.
I learned a lesson, and still got pushed by a Mama goat once. (Though I was just trying to save the baby goat from a dog, the angry Mama goat thought I am trying to hurt her baby and she pushed :'( overprotective silly goat no? )
Happy strong motherhood to each and every protective and overprotective mom.
And Happy parenthood to all the parents including human parents and animal parents.
PS – I was so much lost in the fight or the war, that I couldn’t even think of getting a camera and shoot the scene. But no regrets. I witnessed the same without any interruptions.
